"It is error alone which needs the support of government. Truth can stand by itself."
-- Thomas Jefferson, Notes on Virginia
"On every question of construction [of the Constitution] let us carry ourselves back to the time when the Constitution was adopted, recollect the spirit manifested in the debates, and instead of trying what meaning may be squeezed out of the text, or intended against it, conform to the probable one in which it was passed."
-- Thomas Jefferson, letter to William Johnson, 12 June 1823
In what direction have the economic and political policies of our country been headed? One opinion is that it's been determined by The NAZI Mind-set in America.
The Cato Institute promotes public policy based on individual liberty, limited government, free markets and peace.

"...if circumstances should at any time oblige the government to form an army of any magnitude, that army can never be formidable to the liberties of the people, while there is a large body of citizens little if at all inferior to them in discipline and the use of arms, who stand ready to defend their own rights and those of their fellow citizens."
-- Alexander Hamilton
"The right of the citizens to keep and bear arms has justly been considered as the palladium of the liberties of a republic, since it offers a strong moral check against the usurpations and arbitrary power of rulers; and it will generally, even if these are successful in the first instance, enable the people to resist and triumph over them."
-- Joseph Story, Supreme Court justice from 1812-1845?
"If those states which did not have right-to-carry concealed gun provisions had adopted them in 1992, approximately 1,570 murders; 4,177 rapes; and over 60,000 aggravated assults would have been avoided yearly."
-- Lott, John R. Jr. and Mustard, David B.

Are you tired of the Democrats trying to restrict your economic
freedom through higher taxes and regulations; and the Republicans trying
to restrict your personal liberty by relaxing search and seizure rules
and restricting abortion rights? If so, then you should take a look at
the Libertarian Party. Their main web page is at www.lp.org and is a good starting point to
locate detailed information about the party. On one page within the
site you can view their entire party platform; on another, articles
from their monthly magazine, the LP
News; on a third, you can get information on their State Party Affiliates.
The Libertarian Party candidates for President and Vice-President in 1996 were ballot-qualified in all 50 states and the District of Columbia, as were their predecessors in 1992. This was the first time in U.S. history that a "third party" had achieved ballot status in all 50 states in two successive presidential elections.
Unlike most parties other than the Democrats and Republicans,
the Libertarian Party also had over 800 candidates running for federal,
state and local offices across the United States in 1996; including over
200 candidates for the U.S. House of Representatives. It is truly
America's Third Political Party.

Why do we have a jury system in the U.S.? What are the rights and responsibilities of jurors? Here are some of my thoughts on this subject.
Do you really think that the current judicial system in the United States believes that juries are ultimately responsible for determining whether an accused has really committed an act that calls for punishment? Or is it just interested in rubber-stamping whatever laws our elected officials decide to pass. Read these reports about a Colorado Jury Rights Case before you decide.

"It is an established fact that alcoholism, cocainism, and morphinism are deadly enemies of life, of health, and of the capacity for work and enjoyment; and a utilitarian must therefore consider them as vices. But this is far from demonstrating that the authorities must interpose to suppress these vices by commercial prohibitions, nor is it by any means evident that such intervention on the part of the government is really capable of suppressing them or that, even if this end could be attained, it might not therewith open up a Pandora's box of other dangers, no less dangerous than alcoholism and morphinism."

Do the following look like recent newspaper headlines?
Couldn't they just as easily have been printed during the era of Prohibition? And didn't these problems essentially end shortly after Prohibition was repealed? Why can't our politicians learn from history? Stop the killing. Stop the wasteful spending of our tax dollars. Stop the war on drugs!
Well, it seems that at least some officials in another country have finally come to the conclusion that the American War on Drugs is the wrong approach. Check out this news article.
There's an interesting article, "Just say maybe", on page 114 of the June 17, 1996 issue of Forbes magazine which discusses the legal sale and use of soft drugs in the Netherlands.
