Hayley has said that her early years were bucolic: reading comic books atop milking cows. The course of Ms. Mills' life took a very new direction upon her "discovery" by J. Lee Thompson. Hayley's impressive debut in director Thompson's TIGER BAY (1959) brought her to the attention of Walt Disney. POLLYANNA (1960) demonstrated that Disney could indeed produce superior live-action dramas. Ms. Mills therefore became one of Disney's top properties.
