"Hayley's a heartbreaker. They're lining up from six to sixty just to meet the kid, and one reporter who asked young David Ladd what girl he'd most like to date in the whole world was answered with a long sigh and a heart-felt, "Hayley Mills." Ironically, Hayley isn't allowed to date. She has friends, of course, but they come to the house, and spend hours with Hayley under supervision of her parents, who are aware of the wonder in their midst, and determined that nothing's going to spoil or change her. Hayley sprang on a startled world in TIGER BAY, a 12-year-old magician who walked away with all the picture's reviews, managing to steal it from such pros as her father, veteran John Mills, and young German star Horst Bucholz. Tenderhearted Hayley hid the papers the day those reviews came out, however. She didn't want her father to be hurt! POLLYANNA and THE PARENT TRAP (in which she played a double role) brought her all the fans that TIGER BAY might have missed, and, by the time she was 15, she's already won five awards, including a special Academy Award for being the "Best Juvenile Actress of the Year." Everybody who's anybody wants to hire Hayley, and now Ross Hunter has succeeded in borrowing her from Walt Disney (who holds her contract) to replace the pregnant Sandra Dee in the movie version of THE CHALK GARDEN for U-I. How does Hayley take it? As it comes. This last spring she spent a happy time on the family's Kent farm, playing in a movie which was a kind of family affair. Her mother, Mary Hayley Bell, wrote the script (based on her own novel, "Whistle Down The Wind") and the whole thing was shot right among the Mills' barns and fields and animals. During the summer, she had an even more exciting and challenging experience when she was cast together with Maurice Chevalier in THE CASTAWAYS. And even that old veteran had to shake his head in despair. No one had ever stolen a scene from him since he appeared with Baby LeRoy some thirty years ago. Hayley made the LeRoy kid seem like an amateur, but Maurice loved it. Most recent excitement: Hayley's older sister, Juliet, got married in October (to Russell Alquist) and Hayley was bridesmaid."
