Hayley Mills in a still from her first film, TIGER BAY (playing Gillie, the girl who "...wanted that gun.") She won a Berlin Silver Bear statuette for her extraordinary performance in this film.
The British people as a whole are not enamored of firearms for personal use. In this respect there is a striking difference between Great Britain and the United States (where even children, if they desire, have little trouble obtaining guns). Perhaps their relative lack of experience with firearms made TIGER BAY all the more thrilling to English audiences. (However the pistol itself did not really pose a risk to Gillie; her possession of it and knowledge of its recent history put the child in peril.)
(This still is from the collection of Chris Morris, England.)
