Q: I read that Sir John Mills, who made dozens of British films in the 1940s and '50s, is going blind. What is the cause of his affliction, and how is he doing? --Daniel
Rylant, Memphis, Tenn.
A: Mills, 92, has suffered for almost a decade from macular degeneration, a progressive condition. "Dad's pretty much blind now, just able to see fuzzy shapes, but he gets around wonderfully," said his daughter, former child star Hayley Mills, 54, during rehearsals for her off-broadway debut in Noël Coward's Suite in Two Keys. Sir John, who won an Oscar for Ryan's Daughter (1970), recently published [February, 2000 in the UK] Still Memories, a collection of his photos and reminiscences. "My brother found hundreds of photographs in the attic, under an old boiler," Hayley told us. "My father was a very good photographer, and this collection chronicles almost an entire century."
